Right after breakfast this morning, I saw that Joey was looking a little sad. When I asked him what was wrong, he wrote, “YOU KNOW THAT LIFE IS SOMETIMES SO STRESSFUL”. This was a little unexpected, as Joey had a great night’s sleep and a full belly, and most people (including Joey) are more prone to getting emotional when this is not the case. I reminded him of how therapeutic writing is for him, and suggested that he write about it when we got to school.
Just before arriving at school, I told Joey that I had recently read the phrase, “Worrying is a misuse of creativity”, and explained that people often are very creative about finding things to worry about, instead of focusing on all of the ways in which life is pretty great. A few seconds later, a large smile came to Joey’s face, and his demeanor and mood changed drastically for the better.
When we got into our classroom, Joey wrote that he wanted to write a “STORY ON HOW I HAPPEN TO WORRY UNNECESSARILY”. What emerged was a recipe, or set of instructions, for how to live a happy and “balanced” life. As always, Joey waited until the end to come up with the title, although it will be presented in its usual place below.
